  TEST COMMENTS Detected in virtually all neuronal tumors. May also be detected in other neural crest derived tumors like oligodendroglioma, astrocytoma and ependymoma. Also detected in neuroendocrine tumors like pancreatic islet tumors, carcinoid and neuroendocrine carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma, and pituitary and parathyroid adenomas. Adrenal cortical tumors also stain for synaptophysin.
